How to transcribe a video to text

Three steps. No account.

01

Drop in the video.

Click Upload a video or drag it onto the page: mp4, mov, m4v or webm, up to 15 minutes without an account, 2 hours with a free one. Only the sound is transcribed, so the picture doesn't matter.

02

AI writes the transcript.

Speech-to-text with punctuation, timestamps and every speaker separated, in the language you pick or auto-detected across 26. Usually a couple of minutes, even for a long video.

03

Copy it or download it.

Read the video transcript here, copy it, or download plain text or Markdown. The file is deleted the moment the transcript comes back.

Video to text: questions

The fine print, plainly.

Is this video to text converter really free?+

Yes. Up to 15 minutes per video and 1 hour a day with no account and no credit card. Sign in free with Apple or Google and you get up to 2 hours per video and 3 hours a day. It runs on the same transcription engine as the Recordd app.

How do I transcribe a video to text?+

Click Upload a video, pick the file, and wait a couple of minutes while it transcribes. The transcript appears on the page with speaker labels and timestamps; copy it or download it as text or Markdown. No sign-up at any point.

Which video formats work?+

mp4, mov, m4v and webm, up to 500 MB, which covers most screen recordings and meeting exports. Audio files (mp3, m4a, wav, ogg) work too. A very large phone video may be over 500 MB; exporting it at a lower resolution, or saving just the audio, gets it under.

Can I transcribe a YouTube video?+

Yes, without downloading anything: paste the link into our free YouTube transcript generator and the transcript appears in seconds.

Does it label who is speaking in the video?+

Yes. Speakers are separated automatically and shown as Speaker 1, Speaker 2, and so on, each with a timestamp, which makes interviews, panels and meetings readable.

Can I get subtitles (SRT or VTT)?+

Not yet. You get the transcript as plain text or Markdown with timestamps. Subtitle files are on our list.

Which languages can it transcribe?+

26: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese, Russian, Hindi, Czech, Danish, Greek, Finnish, Hungarian, Indonesian, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Romanian, Slovak, Swedish, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Chinese in simplified and traditional. Auto-detect works; picking the language is a little more accurate.

Is my video stored?+

No. The video is sent to the transcription service, the transcript comes back to your browser, and the file is deleted. Finished transcripts stay in your browser for 24 hours, or in your Recordd library if you sign in and save them; delete them any time. Nothing is used to train AI.

How accurate is the video transcription?+

It uses a current AI speech model with automatic punctuation. Clear speech from one or two people comes out very well; background music, crosstalk and echo make it worse. Choosing the spoken language instead of auto-detect helps.
