Can I record a phone call on my iPhone? Yes, but only one way on the phone itself: Apple’s own Phone app, since iOS 18.1, in the countries where Apple offers it. Third-party apps, Recordd included, cannot record cellular calls on iPhone. iOS does not give them access to call audio.

Check whether Apple’s call recording is available where you are
Apple’s Phone app can record a phone call or a FaceTime audio call when you are talking to one other person. It arrived with iOS 18.1. At the time of writing, Apple lists the European Union, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Russia, and a number of other countries where it is not available. Apple’s Feature Availability page has the current list, and Call Recording is on by default in Settings, under Apps, then Phone.

Record with the Phone app
During a call, tap the more button, then tap Call Recording. Both participants hear an audio notice that the call is being recorded. Tap stop or hang up to finish. The recording is saved to a Call Recordings folder in the Notes app. In select regions and languages, Notes shows a transcript with each speaker identified; it can take a moment to appear.

Know what third-party apps cannot do
No app from the App Store can record a cellular call on iPhone. If you start a Recordd recording and a call comes in, the recording pauses and resumes when the call ends. Any app that promises to record iPhone calls directly is routing your call through its own phone line, which is a different thing with its own privacy questions.

The workaround: speakerphone plus a second device
Put the call on speaker and record the room with another device: a second iPhone or an iPad running Recordd, or a Mac. Both voices land on one microphone track, and Recordd still separates the speakers when you Process. Audio quality is lower than a direct recording, and the person on the other end should know they are being recorded.

On a Mac, record both sides of FaceTime, WhatsApp, and Zoom calls
If the call runs on your Mac, Recordd records your microphone and the Mac’s system audio as two separate tracks. Press ⌘R to start. FaceTime, WhatsApp, Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Slack, Discord, and browser tabs all work because Recordd captures whatever plays sound, with no virtual audio driver and no bot joining. Your own voice is tagged “me” in the transcript because it has its own track.

Apple’s Phone app announces the recording to both parties. Whatever method you use, do the same. In many places you need the other person’s consent, and the rules vary. Check what applies to you.
iPhone call recording and the law
Recording laws are local. Some places require only your own consent; many require everyone’s. Cross-border calls can involve two sets of rules. None of this is legal advice: check the rules where you and the other person are, and when in doubt, ask and get a yes on the recording itself.

On a Mac, yes: Recordd records your mic and the call audio as two tracks. On iPhone, Apple’s Phone app can record FaceTime audio calls in supported regions; WhatsApp calls cannot be recorded by third-party apps on iPhone.
Do I have to tell the other person?+
In many places, yes, by law. Apple’s Phone app plays an audible notice for that reason. Check your local rules and ask before you record.
